There is a funny thing that happens when you write a blog... In the beginning it offers a challenge to write on a self-imposed schedule. Through a process of editing, exploring and programming widgets you watch the blog grow - as measured by the number of posts you accumulate and by the number of people that drop in to visit and leave those precious comments. In the beginning you write for others. There is an element of guesswork involved. Always wondering about what new and interesting thing the visitor wants to read.

Blogging has also been known to inspire a wide range of emotions... joy, ecstasy, intrigue, doubt, pride, humor, frustration, and even guilt (for not blogging on the previously mentioned self-imposed schedule). And sometimes, the initial excitement wains. Not because you don't love to blog - but because life happens outside of the blog.

There is a funny thing that happens when you write a blog... In the end what you write inspires you and reminds you of what you have already done... and what you have left to do. And in the end you realize that you really write a blog for yourself - and that the format allows others to take a peek at what's on your mind.

If you'd asked me what the difference between this year and last was - I'd have to say it was the absence of political primary banter on television. You see, last year my resolution should have been to watch Michael Phelps and the presidential primaries because that is what I was doing instead of being more creative (which was my real resolution) and though obviously very interesting, I did not find much creative inspiration on CNN. The Olympics were inspiring - but unfortunately not for my creativity.

Now with all the global economy changes I've decided turn off the bad news and get out more. Outside in my garden, out of Raleigh, and out of the country. For me this is a huge change from being glued to the television for hours.

I'll be posting more mobile blogs and tweets and hopefully a picture or note in the photo journal may somehow help you find your own muse and inspire you to get out and see more.

I'd love to see places you recommend, so if you have any ideas 0r would like to meet us out on the road - please send me your ideas.

Making Dorm Rooms a Little Greener

Last year I posted some information about how to make a drab dorm room into something better. Today there is an article in the Washington Post about how dorm room decor is becoming big business - and incidentally, becoming more green.

They do note that decorating many dorm rooms each year is more about consumption than it is about recycling, reusing or reducing - but if we all do a little better in our shopping decisions - we can help the planet in the long run. So let's see how we can shop greener for your new dorm room...

A new move to a dorm room requires new bedding? Not quite. If you happen to have an extra-long twin at home, consider taking your linens from home. Second best idea is to buy revived vintage linens and hand-made pillows. There are more than a few places on Etsy for you to shop for bedding and pillows. And one of the best reasons to shop Etsy is that you know your dorm room will never look like any other room. Pillows and sheets can also be sent to your child mid-year :: just around the time when they should be getting some extra rest in anticipation of mid-terms. There's a nice subtle hint. If your bed has a plain metal or wood headboard, make it cozier by covering it with a simple fabric slipcover.

- Small spaces + active young adults = the need for clean fragrance. But not any fragrance - try soy candles which are clean burning and low soot. Or if burning things in the room is restricted, turn to natural spray air fresheners.

Now then onto lighting. Forgo the cheaply made and boring desk lamp from Walmart and opt for something more fun and funky. Buying smart now means at the end of our undergrad program, we won't want to trash these beautiful light sources - but cherish them forever. Some of my favorites are:

Okay you already know how much I love organic milk paint. We have been using the milk paint finishes on a variety of our furniture for a while now - but mostly with a historic palette. So I am thrilled that Anna Sova's line will be re-launching soon. Her color palette is so extensive it's definitely sparking some imagination. It is, in a word, amazing.

I just now pulled a few colors from the Anna Sova website for an adorable footstool in a room, complete with cute floral fabric and girliscious trim. Yummy and Beautiful.

Knee Deep in Fabric

I have been debating for weeks over which fabrics to list in our shop. I have joked in the past that I will have to buy about three homes just to use all the different design styles and fabrics that I am drawn to. I love everything from bright graphic patterns to elegant damask. So it's really difficult for me to edit. But after some consideration, I've listed a few fabrics I hope you will really like.

I am still holding a few of the fabrics in my studio for some personal projects - (mostly contemporary graphic patterns) And still just trying to figure out if I'm making pillows, draperies or painting and covering my vintage dining chairs.

But that's another story for a another time...

What is your favorite fabric category? Prints, stripes, damask, scrolls, modern, brights, whimsical? Do you prefer bright colors or neutrals?

Design Star & New Benches

Last night I watched the latest episode of Design Star. I think the designers are really starting to show their talents.

The design teams had to decorate two hotel rooms based on the home design wishes of country music star, Sara Evans. The look was a sophisticated shabby chic. They used a good bit of reclaimed materials which I love. It's always inspiring to see someone use salvaged materials in a new design - especially at a hotel. The sofas chosen were unlike most of the very hard and unattractive sofas you'll find at most hotels. That alone made you want to visit the hotel to get away from it all.

Well one team of designers ended up using a bench at the end of the bed, which reminded me that I'd failed to share the benches we have with you. So I just listed them this morning.

Since I have a thing for natural materials, I love the fact that these are made with milk paints and tung oil - and that they are so shabby chic.

Have you seen Debbie Travis' new design competition on Fine Living? I really do love Debbie. I've been following her from the time when she was doing fantastic designer paint treatments on walls. She's come a long way since that time. Her company is designing new homes and needs to hire a lead designer. This show reminds me a lot of Hell's Kitchen. A big difference being that Debbie doesn't swear as much - but she's still just as direct as Chef Ramsey.

The first episode is recapped here. I thought it would be fun to follow along and ask you all what you would do with the challenges she presents...

If you missed it, last night she gave everyone a basic door and told them to design it in a way that will express who they are. Some doors turned out to be very predictable and disappointing, others were more creative.

As the challenge wore on, the ultimate challenge winner, Lisa, actually gave up on her original idea and started carving the wood somewhat out of frustration and fear. Her door was more unusual than the rest and she won the competition and the right to choose another designer for possible elimination.

Currently my personal favorite right now is the graphic designer who created a black door with, you guessed it, a graphic design. I appreciated the unique shape of his design and his non-dramatic execution. (I know it's reality tv, but can we get rid of the diva mentality?)
Anyway, I'll be watching him closely to see what he comes up with.

If given the challenge, I would have taken the door, covered it with a rather fluid hand-embossed metal and then painted and distressed it to make it appear ancient. What would that have said about me? Creative, malleable, open to change, loves vintage goods, loves to paint and greatly appreciates art, artisans and architecture.

Here is a quick video of a few the candid shots I took at yesterday's photo shoot for our Keeping Collection. We were on location at a beautiful Chatham County (NC) home. The home was described by the owner as a slice of heaven - and I really concur with that description. Each room in this home should be featured in a design magazine. It's just breathtaking.

This particular gift collection we were shooting features the most heavenly Parisian spa and pampering products we've ever encountered. We've even included an assortment of the softest bamboo towels ever. Sustainable, soft and stylish. The definition of eco-fabulous.

Just imagine having this sweet stash right near your soaking tub. (Guys, trust me - you will be forever adored for your gift-giving prowess if this collection happens to find it's way to your dearest love)

Art for Kids

Most parents have an arsenal of drawings from their kids school art projects. From kindergarten through high school I myself have collected more than my fair share of beautiful scribbles and awesome doodles. Yet, if we only collect and save art from our kids, we're missing out on a valuable lesson in creativity, and perhaps your children's first investment pieces in art.

Happy Mother's Day

Decoupage is a crafting technique of decorating an object by gluing paper onto an object. This is seen on boxes, frames or other objects that you can think of that can be covered or decorated with paper. The idea to decoupage a vase with memorable mother and child pictures was inspired by my many occasions when my lovely husband blessed me with beautiful flower arrangements for Valentine's Day, birthdays or a just because I love you day.

I am a working mom and love fresh flowers on my desk but I also love having pictures of my loved ones around me. Every time I would get new flowers, I was faced with the dilemma of too many things on my desk. I have to remove some pictures to get my flowers on my desk or put my flowers somewhere else. Well I have learned over the years that one problem for one person adds up to be a problem for many others. Then the light bulb comes on..why not decoupage all the pictures you love on a vase.

Then you can conserve space and you can have your flowers and pictures too. As a mom what great joy it is to come to work and see pictures of your loved ones and topped with a beautiful floral arrangement especially with your favorite flower(s). My favorite is the Anthurium plant. I love tropical plants. By using a plant potted in your special vase this does not last for just one week of joy but all year long. This is a handmade gift that is personalized with love.

Design suggestions:

- Any planter can be used to do this technique

- For Mother's Day - use pictures of vacation, special moments that you both shared, notes of inspirational words, poems.etc. Decoupage this on the planter you selected.

- Herbs can be planted in the vase as an alternative to flowers or plants for the Mom who likes to cook and they place it in the kitchen or window seal.

- This is also a great gift for Moms in nursing homes or assistant living centers for a gift that keeps on giving.

- You can also embellish the containers with a unique ribbon or word magnets from Artistic Lifestyling

How to do this project:

Items needed:

- A vase or planter or container
- Decoupage glue - found at your local hobby store Picture here
- Dry cloth
- Scissors
- Pictures/poems/inspirational words
- Sponge brush
- Ribbon
- Embellishments, optional but highly encourage to apply with a hot glue gun
- Hot glue gun (use to adhere embellishments)
- Potting soil (if using to plant herbs or a plant)
- Plant or herb or fresh flowers

Directions:

1. Choose your container and make sure it's clean and dry

2. Gather your pictures - and photocopy (either all black and white or all in color)

3. Make a collage with the pictures on the table before you start gluing.

4. It's helpful to brainstorm before you start.

5. Use photo copies instead of original pictures.

6. Make sure the ink is dry if you have printed them from an inkjet printer at least 24 hours

7. Then tear the pictures to give irregular edges or cut them to give them a clean edge.

8. Once you decide where you want to place the pictures on the vase then start gluing the pictures onto the vase or container. Cover each picture thoroughly with glue or artist gel medium. After the entire vase has been covered with your pictures then apply 2 layers of decoupage glue. Allow the vase to dry for 1 to 2 hours.

9. Finally plant your Mom's favorite flower, herb or place a fresh bouquet of flowers inside.

Earth Day - Clean Green

Earth Day falls on April 22, 2008. This year, thanks to a wide variety of inspiration and information, I have made many more personal changes to green things up around the house.

If you have yet to start on making any green changes, here are a few recipes for easy, healthy cleaning products. Making one change per month makes it easier to make ongoing changes. But really, my motivation was set once I started to do the research about the chemicals and their side effects in many of the products we used.

So here's a quick green clean shopping list:

Vinegar
Borax
Salt
Lemon Juice
Essential Oils for fragrance
Vegetable Oil and Castile Soaps
Baking Soda
Spray Bottles (check out the beautiful linen spray bottles here)

From these ingredients you can make:

Countertop/Surface Cleaner
Combine Vinegar and Salt for a great scrub for many surfaces and non-porous surfaces

Window Cleaner
Vinegar & Water is a classic window cleaner. Use newspaper for a bright shine

Room Freshener
Pour vinegar in a cup to remove odors from your room. Or use vinegar to clean and freshen fabrics (test in an inconspicuous place first)

General Cleaner
With a bit of water the castile and vegetable oil based soaps will clean almost any surface.

Borax (about 1/2 cup), Splash of Vinegar and 1 Gallon of Hot Water can be used to clean and disinfect your rooms and make them sparkle.

When you bottle your cleaners, be sure to order some cute and creative labels to let everyone know what ingredients are included, and what you can use them for.

Inspiration & Dream Boards

Inspiration and Dream boards are found in a few rooms in my house. My kitchen, office, and bedroom each have one. I use them to capture ideas and organize goals and project ideas.

The inspiration board featured here was created from an large 60's picture frame. It hangs in my office and contains a few photos, product prototypes and labels. I have used the board as a frequent background for our product photos.

Dream and Inspiration photos deserve to be embellished too. In fact this idea inspired the Align :: Creative Organization Collection. We've created small custom push pins, magnets, and tacks that reflect the design of the rooms they're used in. Beads, buttons, vintage earrings & small brooches, and brass or copper findings dress up the every day push pin and add that special detail to your room. (I've found that they are also useful for casual curtain and simple panel tiebacks too...)

Now my kids are getting into it. A few weeks back my oldest son and I went shopping for one of his very own. My son quickly posted a photo of new sneakers, a dream car, and some other short term goal reminders. He doesn't have his own tacks yet, but we did hang the board with some beautiful decorative hardware in copper. I'm telling you, it's the details that make the design.

My next project board will be made from a vintage picture frame and some sheet metal. I love the contrast of new and shiny and I also want to use these custom and oh so adorable decorative magnets.

Keep your Stories

It’s 4:34 a.m. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that it’s highly unusual for me to be up at this time writing anything. But I was awakened by a dream about my mom that has urged me out of bed to write this to you.

As you know from the last few posts, I’m working on a new project for my company. It’s called The Keeping Collection. Over the past several weeks I have been knee deep in researching just the right product lines to offer. I’m working alongside three women and one man who are at different stages in their lives. Long before this collection came about, each of these people had already taken time to document the things they love in various ways. So in some ways we are all connected to this project by our love of documenting the life story.

This is so important because we all have a finite number of days here and as I am knee deep in all of this research about all sorts of things, I realized that it’s not the products that are important. It’s why you choose to keep certain things for certain people. That’s what this collection represents. It represents a commitment to taking the time to keep your legacy (ideas, dreams, fleeting thoughts, memories of your past, artwork, etc.) alive, along with all those pretty little gifts.

So what really got me out of bed this morning was this thinking that there are plenty of people (and this is specifically not reserved for moms) but everyone who lets each day slip past without preserving your outlook on life for the people that matter to you.

I definitely appreciate seeing photos but I also want to see the full, in-depth journals; the heart felt letters; mindless doodles; house plans; kitchen storage ideas; anything that gives me a richer picture of the person. In fact, the single most important thing that I would have wanted is a hand-written journal from my mother. Written specifically for me over the years, to Lise the 28 year old daughter she never met, and the 35, and to the future 40, and even the 90 year old. I often wonder what she would want me to know at these stages of life.

So this is what drives me to create this collection, and something for my own children as well. I have plans to turn this blog into a book for my kids. Any personal blog is, in fact, a perfect addition to a keeping collection. And we'll show you how to do that too if you want.

What else will I keep?

What I miss are the recipes for cooking and baking things that my mom and grandmother probably found effortless – yet in some cases, I can’t discern just the right ingredients anymore. So I would keep my every day recipes.

I miss hearing them laugh. So I will record a few conversations.

I wonder what they would have said about various situations I’ve found myself in. I missed out on years of advice. From their perspective, what did I need to know? What was important to them? I would share that advice.

I will tell my family how I see them in this world and how often I tell other people about their accomplishments. I'll throw in my hopes and dreams for each of them and not just once, but often enough for them to get a real picture of how they've changed and grown throughout the years.

The Keeping Collection

Over the past few months we have been diligently working on our new project, called The Keeping Collection. The Keeping Collection is simply our answer to the missing modern day hope chest. Based on the traditional hope chests that our grandmothers used to keep, but with a modern edge. This collection will be launched soon on our website, but I couldn't resist sharing some of the information with you.

The Keeping Chest is offered in three sizes and styles - and it is benchmade. Benchmade is a term that means that it is hand crafted by one person, (right here in the USA) with particular emphasis on traditional furniture making methods. Each chest is constructed for the individual - there are none in stock, as they say. Plus our Keeping Chests are made with eco-friendly materials. No harmful fumes for you, just beautiful wood & hardware, milk paint and non-toxic stains. I love that.

Personally, I feel very fortunate to be connected to this product for several reasons. First, because I want to help people who are requesting both sustainability and quality from their products. I really believe in purchasing furniture that can be passed to the next generation and not end up in a landfill somewhere. Heirlooms - a return to classic, time-honored style.

I'm also so excited to connect you with the person that makes the keeping chests. You know from whence these come, because each chest comes with a special introduction and letter from the artisan, not an inspected by sticker. Hand made by one person especially for your loved one. Not shipped on a slow boat. That in itself is a story.

Another big reason I feel fortunate to be a part of this is because I'm also sensing a need that all people want to collect special things for their future. In a way, I want to turn tradition on its proverbial ear. In the past, hope chests were used to save precious items for young ladies who were preparing for marriage. Today however, all people have a desire to collect meaningful items for their future - whether you are a man or a woman, or plan to marry or not.

Plus I've already heard stories of using Keeping Chests as unique gifts for bridal showers and children collecting memories for parents, instead of the other way around. Our business meetings have included talks of collecting vintage jewels and photographs, journals, recipes, and diaries of family traditions and events in hidden compartments within the Keeping Chest. Oh the things we can collect...

This weekend I was invited to see my friend Karis' collection of vintage jewelry. The snapshots on this post don't really do this collection any justice. Karis began collecting these pieces at a very young age. So these vintage jewels are gorgeously exquisite. I was in awe of this YUMMY stuff. When people say that they just don't make it like they used to - there is a reason.

Because we love re-use in design, we are lucky that some of these jewels and a few of her vintage buttons will make their way onto our own line of one-of-a-kind handmade pillows and other linens.

Mastermind Design Groups

Traditional mastermind groups are designed to catapult you to success by holding each member accountable for their life's goals and objectives. I like this idea a lot.

I also love the idea of creating a Mastermind Design Group to plan and execute your major remodels, redesigns or new builds; to bounce ideas off of one another; and to maximize your buying power. Mastermind Design Groups can last for a just short while or for a lifetime!

It is best if your group happens to contain an interior designer, architect or builder. Ask them to take you on a shopping trip to the design markets. A designer with great sources can introduce you to a world of products and catalogs from which you can place your order as a group, often at very substantial discounts.

If any of you need to rebuild, your design group can approach local service providers and subcontractors who can give your group some of the best deals around. So find your neighbors and friends who need similar jobs and if you can all agree; offer the work to the same subcontractors.

I have literally been dreaming about ribbons and other embellishments. I'm not kidding about waking up with new projects and ideas in mind with my hands flying about as I sleep... and I wonder if this is normal? Anyone? Anyone? I have a friend who adores furniture and always says she can eat the furniture because it's so delicious. I have always found this to be an odd statement - but somehow I can now relate with all of this creative deliciousness.

Batik & Ink...

The photo included on this post is of a hand carved ink and batik stamp imported from Asia for our Global Collection. These stamps have been used for centuries to create designs on textiles. You can use ink to dye the fabric directly or melted wax for a batik resist.

I just think these are so cool as design elements for your shelf, desk or table. I could even envision these as a wall grouping in large square pattern.

The three patterns we have in stock are listed on our website - I am so excited to see how you use these! We are buying more designs too so bookmark that page!

Embellished...

I thought I would share a few snapshots of some of the embellishments slated for use in upcoming Jump Off Design boxes.

I love the ethereal quality of this particular flower. We are trying to choose between a lampshade or silk pillow project; or even a very simple project - using it to adorn a tassel that hangs from your doorknob.

And speaking of tassels, we've found some gorgeous and colorful options. Since this is so cute, I'd probably hang it on a door that I use daily, just so I could admire it often.

This flower is made from tin in a design that's not for the timid. One project idea is to use several around an otherwise plain round mirror. It could be painted or left in its natural state.

And finally I looked at this trim and immediately thought about redoing the back sun porch pillows with this trim. Hot. Spicy. Fun.

A Creative Home

She was sourcing products from various time zones in countries she's never visited. Trying to find the things that fit into her idea of a creative home. A creative home beckons you like a well kept secret, perhaps beyond a vine-covered brick wall just past a wrought-iron gate. It is a home that is definitely customized for the people that live there, life-inspired, friendly, approachable and memorable...

So for the last several weeks, she's been asking herself what kinds of beautiful things go into a creative home? And here's what she mentioned to me...

She intends to provide the raw ingredients for creativity like trims, buttons, and notions from all around the globe. And vivid fabrics. Some screen printed by hand, some imported from far away lands with authentic designs that can't be found locally. And many more fabrics that are domestically produced by independent design studios and artists.

She's discovered a few products that will allow you to design and redesign your creative home to your heart's content. Portfolios to carry and keep your notes, photos and dreams about your home and your life.

And then she remembered that she's downshifting into a lifestyle of simplicity. She has made a point to keep the things she loves, pull them out of her storage bin and live with them every day instead of buying new every time. And perhaps others were as well. So she created a few project kits for creating unique and quirky mixtures of textures and textiles, including the ability to remix your own vintage fabrics.

But because she can't cover everything with her vintage fabrics, she found some paint that doesn't require her to work outside because of the smell. Eco-friendly paints, dry pigments, stains, glazes and patinas - all to help her color her environment and make it her own.

She has a great appreciation for tradition and loves the feel of letterpress stationery and hand embroidered linens; but she requires a more modern and whimsical design. So she's found a source to help her customize some luxurious towels, bedding, and paperie with some very creative monograms. Things worth saving for her children to use when they marry and move away.

However, it seems the thing she loves the most are the ribbons. She has been dreaming of ribbons made of velvet, silk, and cotton. How she loves to embellish...

I love living in a southern city. Raleigh is not like NYC (which was the largest metropolitan area near my birthplace.) I love the fact that I have trees and grass and the convenience the city brings.
I have been working 4 books on home design, Journaldoodling, creative living, and gardening.
A couple of years ago, wanting to offer emotional support to my son, I watched him have a routine surgical procedure on his eyelid. Just as I was getting up to leave the office I nearly fainted from the experience. Now that's what I call support!
I think that reading blogs is in some ways better than reading a book or a magazine. It offers more direct contact with the author and I find that the best blogs are personal, real, and very imaginative.
I share a favorite dessert with Gabriela, it's Tiramisu too.
I have bragging rights to being the reigning Scrabble champion in my family.
My favorite design style is eclectic and inspired by travel, color, family, and life experience.

Making Sanctuary Spaces

My personal definition of a sanctuary is simply a place to go to hibernate for a while. I'm easy that way. Though it would be really nice to have just one room devoted to the pursuit of cocooning, my sanctuary begins with a peaceful state of mind, and for about $200 you can also create a sanctuary space that moves with you.

Here's how:

Satisfy your inner child. My inner child is really happy with soft pillows, fresh flowers, art supplies, blankets, dream pillows and comfortable lounge wear. A big chair facing the ocean with a great book and my iPod is always a great option too.

If you are fortunate enough to have an unused or an underutilized room, for about $300 - $500 you can totally devote the space to the pursuit of Zen. Paint the room a color that reminds you of your favorite nurturing space, vacation, or family home. Add some ceiling accents. Try using words on your walls and playing world music to remind you to slow down and zone out. A great lounge chair, some floor pillows and maybe a bit of sound-proofing to keep it quiet and you're on your way to total relaxation.

With a larger budget, you can create an all-out retreat. Build a treehouse of your own or buy a rustic cabin in the mountains or a bungalow at the beach. Just make sure it's a comfortable commute or it will become more of a hassle than a great getaway.

I have been so busy with being creative on the business side I've neglected my blogging. The team at Artistic Lifestyling has been busy revamping the entire website to include a more diverse perspective on creative living.

We now have several categories called:

Since we wanted to have a site you couldn't find anywhere else, and amazing products to boot - we wanted to hand-draw all the icons. We were all set to expand on the house theme that appears on the top of this blog - and then we started to name the categories. At that point the houses didn't make much sense anymore. So - I started some new drawings. (I've added a few of the new icons that made it onto the site on this post.)

So while we're still under construction please take a look around the new site and let me know what you think. Just be careful because all the railings are not in place yet, and a few doorknobs aren't installed - but we're getting there.

What a crazy busy week this was. I was in Anaheim for the Craft and Hobby Association trade show. And for most of that time I was sick with the flu :-(

I Haven't Forgotten...

I learned a lot of stuff from my family.

My brother teaches me how to take things apart and put them back together - he's a mechanic today and often called Mr. Fix It.

My grandfather taught me how to garden and use hand tools. He also stressed that you must be neat when you work and not rush - especially when painting. He was a skilled craftsman.

My grandmother suggested I do something with computers, which I did. She also taught me about how to invest in the stock market - plus how to cook, sew and crochet. She was a seamstress by day, and ahead of her time in many ways.

My mother taught me so many things - most notably how to entertain, paint, draw, laugh and travel well. She was an artist, designer and best friend to many.

My father continues to teach me the art of big talk, and the finer points of cooking with various herbs. (lots of them). He's a retired HR consultant.

My aunt taught me to appreciate hand knitted sweaters and blankets. Though I admit I don't knit very well - yet.

I learned a lot of stuff from my family - and luckily I haven't forgotten.

Artistic Ceilings

I have this issue and I am reminded of it every day that I wake up. My ceiling is bare. It's not flat - I have this decorative trey ceiling complete with trim. But it is still fairly boring and it needs help.

All ceilings should have something interesting to look at. Whether it is an inspiring color or some detail that you like. I think that this is important, especially in hospitals - where there are so many people who stare at the ceilings all day. It could be a surface for inspiration. I mean - imagine if you could stare at the work of Chagall or Michelangelo? That might just make a few people feel better while they're stuck in a hospital bed.

Anyway - I think I've found a stencil company that I'll use. Visit them here: Modello Designs.
They have beautiful designs, and you can even design your own stencil from your own artwork. And that's all I needed to see to make my decision.

Of course there are other ways to create something interesting for your ceiling:

Paint a mural
Use wallpaper (The Cheesecake Factory uses wallpaper on their ceilings and niches)
Attach a decorative medallion
Use interesting lighting - anything from rope lights to decorative chandeliers
Or try glass
Finally, try your hand at decorative plastering like they did years ago. (Be sure to click that link they are awesome!!!)

I hope this inspires you to create something interesting for your own ceiling.

The Cobblers Children are Painting

So this weekend we tried Benjamin Moore's new line of paint called Aura. I read about it in a trade reference so I was anxious to work with it, to see if it would be worth recommending to our clients. We were early. Our local paint store had just set up the display on Friday and we were the first customers in to try the new paint.

We decided on the French Press color, which is a deep coffee bean brown. Aura is another low VOC paint - in the 50's range - so the paint smell is not overwhelming. It covers very well - we got the paint on the wall in one coat with no need to touch up any areas which is really amazing for a darker color. The trade off is that it doesn't spread as far so you may need more paint. And it's fairly costly at around $50 a gallon. Also the color range is not as extensive as the other Ben Moore Traditional, Pottery Barn, or PreView lines. But it is definitely worth a try.

Resolutions

I don't like to make resolutions for January 1st of a new year. Mostly because I think that we can resolve to change something at any given moment, not just when the ball drops in Times Square. Goodness knows I have changed many things in 2007. And happily the changes are for the better...

Yet tonight I feel compelled to announce a new resolution. So in 2008 I've simply decided to be more creative; and to devote time (a day, an hour, whatever it takes) each week to create a little piece of art. Right now I'm thinking it will be drawing, but it could be writing, sewing, designing, playing - whatever.... And maybe I'll even post the results to Etsy or the blog.

I have signed so many posts with the words "Be Creative" but I find myself drifting away from taking action and only admiring the great abilities of others. If this sounds like you, maybe you too will join me in this decision. Let it be something small if you are feeling overwhelmed by this thought. But take the step, buy the materials, do something to build your creative legacy and have a fantastically happy, wonderfully artistic, brain-building, fear-conquering, soul-stretching new year.

Trends for 2008

I have been looking at the design "trends" for 2008 while we source new products. I've tracked the "hot news" from Europe back to the states. What I find really interesting is how the new products are presented - it's a treat to take a look at what's coming next. Since I love color and furniture I do like to see what's new; but I still prefer to do my own creative thinking; so I am using the list of trends for a creative jump start instead of fully embracing and copying them. So here's a glimpse of what I have seen for design and color in 2008.

Expect more color

We're seeing products that run the color spectrum - these are more vivid colors than we've seen in 2007. In fact, 2007 was all about neutrals, so the industry has almost done a complete revamp when it comes to colors. In a trade preview, we noticed that Pottery Barn has completely dispensed with the darker neutrals and features a rainbow of bright and bold color in their 2008 product line, using white and ivory as the backdrop to let the colors pop. We've also noticed a trend to use color in combination with greys and silvers.

Benjamin Moore has a paint line that corresponds with the Pottery Barn Products. So if you're interested in doing a feature wall in a bold shade, check them out. They still have more blues and greens, than they have reds and yellows; so don't worry about going with a color that is too overwhelmingly bold for your space. The greens and blues are still relaxing colors to use. I am anxiously waiting for the Yolo Colorhouse 2008 color collection to see what they are up to.

Graphics

Ok, so if you haven't noticed in 2007 there were a lot of graphic patterns everywhere. This continues into 2008. They are lovely, but this is an area that I think has the potential to be compared with the Avocado Green and Harvest Gold kitchen appliances from the 70's. So, because I do like the graphic patterns, I may invest. But not in a carpet - I'd go for the wall decals in a bold but removable graphic.

Eco-Friendly Design

This isn't going anywhere, at least as long as there is a threat of global warming - so I'm not sure it can be called trendy. Still I thought we should highlight this here as it is a growing segment of interior design. To highlight, we should be demanding that our products are:

from sustainable, reclaimed or recycled sources
energy efficient
chemical and pesticide free
fairly traded
comfortable and beautiful

Eclectic Looks

When we hear the word "eclectic" in design we may think of a collection of unmatched furniture, and personal decorative items which are brought together to create a stylish room. Though I think it also encompasses global fusion and the melding of design styles like country and urban. This is the preferred way to design in my book - turn things around and make a personal statement; so I am glad it's being highlighted in 2008.

Ok so back to my remark about the Avocado Green and Harvest Gold kitchens. At one time or another someone decided this was trendy. hmmm. I'll just wrap by reminding you that there are no rules, do what you love!

Inspiring Design Travel

We have been working diligently on creating some new things for you. I'm very excited at all the progress the team has made. All of this has taken me away from blogging regularly, but to whet your appetite before the launch, I thought I'd tell you about our series of inspirational shopping excursions around the globe.

This whole idea came about when I realized that I am guilty of having too narrow a focus when it comes to design and creativity. Although nature is inspiring, I won't always find the inspiration I seek in my own backyard. I have not only a desire, but a strong need to go out and explore; and I figure there are others like me. So, you're invited too.

These trips we are planning are primarily intended for interior designers, decorators, creatives, and DIYers. Together we will discover the unique characteristics of each destination from a design and creativity perspective - we will explore foods, fabrics, textiles, and assorted handmade goods - and of course, we will do some major shopping.

Now, one of the trips I am most excited about will be to Peacock Pavilions in Marrakech. One reason I am so excited by this trip is because I love architecture. Maryam and her husband are in the midst of creating a fabulous place. Take a look . Even though it's not finished, it is utterly breathtaking right? Then take a look at all the unique finds.

Salon Project

I thought I'd share the new photos of the salon we finished today. I think the longest part of this was the taping and the overnight drying time for the base coat. Other than that the lime wash and glaze project went pretty smoothly and the finish works so well with the lines of the curved wall.

And the best part is that we think Chris, the salon owner, really loved it. :-)

Evaluating Fabulous Products

I have spent these past few weeks evaluating products for a couple of new online e-tailing ventures. (more on those later)

Yesterday I received a beautiful package of paint colors. Thank you to Laurel from YOLO Colorhouse for sending me these fabulous family cards. Laurel is great.

It's a wonderful feeling when you absolutely know what you're meant to do with your life. I could literally not help staring at these vivid paint colors and envisioning where I can use these. This package made my day. So much potential. Such a wonderful product. I especially love the Petal and Sprout pages. I think these colors are so beautiful - especially when used in a child's play or work space! (or even used for an adult with a childlike outlook :-)

In all honesty, the YOLO colorhouse company has done an amazing job with the presentation of their products. Their website is awesome, but the colors on these pages are not to be missed. And any walls with these colors have got to be just dazzling. So my next step is to try a can of paint for one of my upcoming projects. Can't wait.

This 3-day opening event will showcase new work and hundreds of artful gift ideas featuring "Creations by Colorful People and People of Color" and will run through December 31st.

acoupalathings

Hi everyone!

This has been a long week - and I am so looking forward to spending some time off at home next week shopping, researching some new recipes, baking, prepping and cooking.

But before that, I still have a few details to wrap up for the painting project for the wall

above.

We'll get started on painting this project at the end of the month. It is a very cool curved wall created for an upscale salon in this area.

I so wanted to do a Moroccan theme with a beautiful pattern bringing in various earthy colors with a subtle glaze over top. But alas, we are probably going with a Venetian plaster finish in a warm ochre color. Yes, I think the color is a good choice for the dark wood finishes in the space - but I still fancy the other theme better.

And in other breaking news...

I also ran into my local Barnes & Noble this week and spotted a copy of Amy Butler's new book, Midwest Modern

What immediately caught my eye in the first few pages was Amy's description of Art & Life.

"I think that in everything we do, in every style of life, there is art to be found. Not just in the studios of talented artists, but in the gardens, homes, relationships, spirits, voices, and fashions of people you see every day."

If you know anything about my creative passions, you can see immediately why that quote resonates with me...

So I'm looking forward to reading Amy's book; and learning more about her approach to art and living.

You'll need enough decorative elements to execute your tabletop design. Here are a few materials you might want to use:

Tiles - Large or small, you can make a faster mosaic design using the epoxy as a cover.
Metal - Not an entire sheet of metal that completely covers the table, but try recycled ceiling tiles, or smaller pieces of scrap metal.
Paper - You can patterned or plain. I especially like the look of worn/crinkled brown wrapping paper.
Small pipes
Wood
Paints
String
Ribbon
Buttons
Place mats
Textured Fabric (burlap works nicely)
Nailhead trim
Edging for table (see comments below)

These are the two required materials:

Epoxy Resin (You can find resin at your local hardware store in larger containers or online.)
Table Surface (You can cover an existing table or re-purpose another object like a intricately carved/decorative door. You can also make a table out of almost any surface including heavy plywood.)

Next, you'll need to prep the table/surface

If you plan to use a flat surface, but wish to "suspend" your bulkier design elements within a thick layer of epoxy, then your table must have an edge to hold the liquid epoxy. Attach veneer duct tape, or wood molding to build a raised edge around the table. Make sure that you fill any gaps on the raised edge so that the epoxy doesn't seep through.

If you just want to brush on a thin coat of epoxy you won't need the molding edge. And if you're using a door you may just need to fill in the carving by pouring the resin into the nooks and crannies.

Once the table is prepped, create your design...

Have fun with the materials you've collected. Remember that if the design materials are bulky, you'll need a thicker coat of resin to cover the materials and remain even with the edge. You may want to stick some of the materials to the surface to ensure that they don't move when you pour in the epoxy.

If you're using a thin coat, don't forget to decorate the sides of the table. Consider using the nailhead trim if you're wrapping the existing table with fabric or the crinkled paper.

Once you're done with decorating, mix and pour the epoxy resin according to the directions. Thicker layers require multiple coats. You can also suspend small bits of glitter or small objects between coats too. For a thin layer use an old brush to apply the epoxy coat over and around the sides of the table.

Now, just let it dry according to the time specified on the directions.

Happy Halloween!

I took a few minutes to watch Martha's show last night. She was making last minute Halloween costumes. Really they were just the head gear made from lightweight Crayola clay fashioned into caterpillars, unicorn horns and antenna. The clay dries without baking and it can be painted. Martha kind of "owns" Halloween. I don't recall another mainstream lifestyle expert who is so fascinated with this particular holiday. Anyway, she and her staff created some very interesting projects - but the stars of the show were definitely the kids!

They were so adorable in their costumes; and they definitely held their own while Martha asked question after question.

This year I'm taking Matthew and Ethan out to trick or treat. Matthew is Darth Vader and Ethan is a chicken. I will post some pictures of the costumes soon.

Expect and demand more from interior design. You've definitely heard of some design terms already - floating floors, COM, faux finishes, commercial grade, earth-friendly & green products, low VOCs, reuse, redesign, refurbish, sub-contractors, home staging, organization - oh how the design field has evolved.

One simplistic way of looking at what goes into an interior design plan is maybe that we spend lots of time matching fabric patterns to your carpet. But the really good designers have gotta know way more stuff about way more stuff.I love design books, and I laughed out loud when I read a quote from Candice Olsen's book (I think it was from Candice Olson on Design) about how most people approach her and tell her how glamorous they think being a designer is. It's actually the same thing people told me about modeling - I'd think "What is so glamorous about lots of hot lights, heavy makeup, long hours, disappointments, and people constantly telling you what to do??"

Fact is, I think I spend most most of my time sourcing products, learning more about their particular properties and how it will affect the client, the budget, the home, the installation, and the environment - That is not glamorous per se, but rather fun if design is your passion. There are SO many choices that it really does pay to have someone narrow them down for you and help decide on a good look that works within your budget. Anyone can design a room. Anyone can pick up wallpaper samples from a local store to redo a bathroom. And there are many materials available for your basement floor project. Pay a designer to advise you about the important but often-overlooked details.

Depend on your designer for specific information, and to help with making selections and installations. Use them to save time and advise you on your overall design budget. Use them to find those flooring options that are made from a renewable source and have that funky geometric design you were thinking of.

Your designer should be advising you on both the stylish and the realistic information about what it will take to achieve your dream room.

And I only touched on the commercially available products. Truth is, I really love it when you ask me to find something unique. Then I can tell you the story about these beautiful and affordable hand-made fabrics from Morocco, the found object/hand-painted grandfather clocks made by an artist in Vermont, and the furniture made in the mountains of North Carolina - and how to use them in your home. So - expect and demand more from good design.

Last weekend I started a dining room redesign project. A love of diversity and global perspectives makes me choose certain elements for a design based on those qualities. The entire design is urban/country with a touch of swedish simplicity. Here's how it is coming together...

Swedish Design Elements

Swedish design is often very sparse and clean. Swedish window treatment designs are good for quick projects. So inspired, I decided on an unlined panel designed to be fixed in place on the window and hung on a tension rod inside the window. This was the quick and simple pattern that I had in mind when I went shopping for fabrics.

Urban / Country Elements

When shopping I was drawn to a very tactile burlap fabric. Yes, burlap. The lady at the fabric store looked at me sideways when I told her it was for a window. Despite the funny looks, I knew that burlap would be ideal for this window treatment project - it was just the unexpected, edgy urban quality I was seeking. And frankly I think people may be afraid of working with it because of the tendency to fray and maybe the cost stigma? I think though, that when you're designing multiple looks for each season, you should feel free to experiment. Nothing has to be permanent!

The color I chose was the natural burlap color:

Because of the open weave, burlap won't provide complete privacy unless you include a privacy liner which in this case was not important to the design. But if you want something that you won't see on the windows next door, give it a try as a valance cover or fixed panel. I don't recommend using raw burlap as a drape, but there are other fabrics which mimic certain qualities of the burlap with better draping qualities.

So, the next urban element is the black, amber, and crimson beaded trim for the hem. As you can imagine, the beading was actually more expensive than the fabric. It's urban because of the color, unexpected qualities, and subdued sparkle from the beaded trim + country for the use of the hard-working burlap fabric, hardware, leather, and twine.

I also love that the burlap will make a great contrast to a more upscale fabric such as raw silk - which in this case is the next layer on the windows. The silk is a crimson color picking up on the color of the beaded trim.

The silk panels will be lined and fixed in place also - just providing that color pop against the earthy burlap color. I will hang the fabric panels in a non-traditional way too. I have narrowed the hardware down to two choices - grommets and hooks, or wrapping the top of the fabric with twine or leather cording and hanging on a hook or nail. I am growing tired of the traditional rod and clip, plus because this is a bay window with decorative trim in inconvenient places it calls for a bit more creativity.

I like the country rustic look of hooks and nails I found online at Rustic Hardware. The selection reminds me a lot of the Southwest style of furniture I fell in love with in Texas and Mexico. Love that look.

Every year I think I'm going to style my front porch - this year was no different. With little time after writing to do much more than sleep, I've managed to plop a few pumpkins on the top of my steps. I had three, one went bad already!

So anyhow this is a view of what's there now - maybe this weekend I will expand on my styling and let you take a peek at that effort. Or maybe I'll get a little extra sleep :-)

Teaching in California - Yay!

I thought I'd take a quick break from playing monster-chasing-around-the-house-with-Ethan to tell you about an upcoming workshop I'll be teaching at the Winter CHA (Craft Hobby Association). The workshop will be held on February 12th, 2008 in Anaheim CA.

I will be leading a group of 50 merchants through the steps of creating design boards using the Canvas Home Spacing kit. Suze Orman will be giving the keynote speech too! Can't wait to listen to her financial advice!

Doodles and files and pillows oh my...

This afternoon I spent some time combining doodles with photos for a signature file for my daughter's email.

I have to experiment with the text and layout a bit more and she really doesn't like this photo so I'll have to change that too - but I wanted to give her an idea of what it would look like.

Once I am ok with the final design, my plan is to transfer it to some material and make a pillow out of it for her bed.

Come to think of it, the mini pillows might be a fun Christmas gift for her friends. If we started tomorrow we might get them all finished.

Inspire Me Thursday - Limited Palette

This week at IMT, the topic is limited palette. In working on an idea for a few ATCs, I used the limited palette on the left. (The pale jade and grey colors on the right side of the card aren't scanning well)

After the palette was fixed. I made the surface design (first image) for the two coffee cups and applied it to the cups, altering the perspective a bit.

How do you display your art?

oooo I'm having one of those days when I've seen so much cool work from various artists that I can hardly keep still.

I am working on the design of a child's bedroom. Kids have huge imaginations and I love the idea of having custom art collections for young people. I don't always like to hang prints or do murals though - especially in larger rooms, or rooms with more interesting architechture. And so this lets me explore a lot of dimensional artwork. Which then leads me to a lot of brilliant artists.

Already today I've seen a beautifully quilted art journal; and several custom-made dolls with lots of creative details. I love the deliciousness of pieces like these; but these are dimensional objects and not always suited for framing. Forcing you to think creatively.

Basically we all display art in three ways:

Sitting on the floor or pedestal,
Hanging directly on the wall, or
Suspended from the ceiling.

Now this is where things can get intriguing depending on the size of the art, its dimensions, the materials used in the piece, and the people in the home.

Size - Smaller art like ATCs can get lost if they are not in the right composition; while larger pieces may need to be secured with heavier hardware - even consulting with a structural engineer for the largest and heaviest artwork we can find. With the ATCs, these make very cool displays if you have a collection that can be divided by color. These can be used en masse, or as a border in a room. (especially cute in a studio or hallway)

Dimensional art - I use those shadow boxes for a lot of two dimensional art. I also like to dispense with the shadow boxes and paint squares and rectangles in alternating shades of paint for areas where I want to display a piece directly on the wall.

For busts and other heavy sculpture pieces I tend to sit those on bookshelves or desks. I don't use pedestals very often - especially in homes with small children.

I love using art dolls and quilts, in an area without natural light so that the object does not fade quickly. You can display items like these across several shelves making an instant focal point in the room. You can also secure dolls directly to the wall with art clips.

Fishing line works well for hanging some artwork directly from the ceiling. I like to use this for kids bedrooms and craft spaces. Lighter weight objects work well and don't require you to use a stud to secure the cup hook. Use a decorative hardware and a figure 8 knot to secure items and prevent falling.

Inspire Me Thursday - Fun & Games

Hola!

With many projects going on at once - forcing me to multi-task; I wasn't able to participate with IMT for a little while. So I'm really glad to be back to participate with this week's topic - Fun and Games.

So this is actually my idea of fun. Part of the reason for creating this art is that I am manifesting my little dream cottage studio for a cottage industrialist. Lots of fun and games will be going on inside this dream studio. I am having fun choosing the colors for the outside sample - imagine what the inside will look like! For my sample I chose shades of lime, chartreuse, cream, sky blue and purple.

Truth be told I really am keeping my eyes open for a craftsman home with all the details I drew; so that I can do a complete reno and paint it funky colors. Now in some parts of Raleigh I think the preservation committee would have a wee problem with my color palette. So I'd have to go with a more subdued traditional color on the outside and express my creative side on the inside.

So much fun.

I call my brother Bucky O'Hare - I think I got this from a cartoon character in the 80's or 90's but I can't be sure. My daughter says he is a macro dont. Kristen says in Latin Macro means Long and Large, and Dont means Tooth. Go figure. I never learned this in school :-) Sorry Dale.
I sometimes, secretly hope my art doesn't sell because I want to keep it forever.
I can still do a cartwheel but...
I failed gymnastics in college because I came off the balance beam and twisted my angle. Not pretty.
I use hidden messages in my art. Like another famous, but dead artist.
I finished this list in less than 5 minutes because... I'm headed out for dinner on a Saturday night with my family.

House to Home & Home to House - Which design approach is right for you?

An email arrived today asking for some advice about a new home. The home in question had immediate appeal; which is why made an offer within hours of her first visit. However, the owner is contemplating a sale just six months after moving because it doesn't seem like a good fit for her anymore. She essentially wanted to know how it could be possible to fall out of love so quickly when "there is nothing really wrong with the house."

Without seeing the house I immediately wondered if she had made her house a home. Here is the gist of my reply:

Home to House Design Phase

The Home to House design phase occurs before you put your house on the market. Not planning for this phase may negatively affect your marketing efforts. Home to House Design is normally characterized by the terms neutralizing, staging, show home, model home, and market ready. The space is usually missing family pictures, and custom touches (and by custom I mean any choices having a strong personal appeal that very few will appreciate).

Also missing are shocking colors, anything that will offend the average person, clutter, dirt, and most traces of family life. All the spaces within the house have an obvious function. You may decide to hire a home or real estate staging professional, or a redesign expert to help you with this phase. I don't necessarily recommend looking for an interior designer at this time unless they offer a (lower cost) redesign or staging service. Generally, interior design services are more expensive and normally selected when you want to make a place feel like home. Save the interior design for later. What you want is for people looking at the house to feel like they can turn this stylish model home into their home... which usually brings a quick sale and the new owner now focused on the...

House to Home Design Phase (or, where my caller needs to be today)

Characterized as breathing personality into the space, making yourself at home, and leaving your mark. It also means assessing your space and making changes to suit your personal taste and functional needs. Hiring an interior or creative designer at this stage if you need help is a good move. Also helpful during this phase are organization specialists, painters, faux finishers, closet designers, and artists. But if the Home to House phase looms anywhere on the horizon, I caution you about making extensive and costly changes you'll need to correct later for a quick sale.

Of course, these are only a few general considerations I would use to determine the best approach. (Haven't we have all heard exception stories of a-dog-of-a-home selling quickly simply because it is located in a fabulous area or offered at a great price??)

So - here's hoping that with whatever phase you happen to find yourself in you will...

Inside Design - Mood Boards

I am choosing new colors for a dining room project. The room I am designing is located near the front door of the home, and is one of the first areas on view as you enter. I wanted to build a vibrant room; making statements with the colors and graphic patterns. I love the palette so far. It was inspired in part by a simple quote - Bloom where you are planted; and also by the blend of colors in the small seashell.

Beyond color, this design will also incorporate creativity in strong doses. There is a graphic yet subtle wall design plan. Along with a paint-on-canvas project. I'll also add some custom pillows and add colorful trim throughout.

As for function; I want the room to be used year round, not just for special occasions. I've decided to have it work for both dining and reading. I want to use two over sized, dual-purpose, reading and dining chairs near the window. I like the texture of this particular chair. With the high back and clean lines it definitely makes a statement and provides a little shelter from overexposure near windows. I'll cover the cushions with a bold- patterned fabric in a color that will contrast with the other colors I have chosen already.

Shopping for the tabletop will be fun. I am thinking of a really clean white on white modern pattern for the dishes. Square - not circle. And a funky coral centerpiece with candles for a moody and mod atmosphere.

For this project, I will also need to cover a decorative inset on the wainscoting. I'm thinking of covering the panels with fabric too. You can apply fabric to the walls using liquid starch.

Creative Dorm Rooms

So my oldest son is off to college this year. I had forgotten how small, and shall we say, unadorned a dorm room can be.

Now of all my children Chris is the least interested in design; but even he had to admit that he wouldn't mind sprucing up his room. Ah, the last convert....

One of the biggest and least expensive changes we can make is to the walls. Since we're not allowed to paint anything in the room; the next option is to cover the walls and cabinets with removable things. Here are a few ideas:

Big flags and multiple pennants. Ok this is a standard dorm decoration. You can find a ginormous flag or pennant sets; hang up on the wall with duct tape or velcro, and you're ready for class

King size (light-weight) quilts and sheets offer a quick fix for drab walls. If the room has those cork hang strips you hang from there with T-pins. If not, attach the fabric with heavy duty velcro strips.

Shower curtains - WHAT? Yes. Hang a shower curtain with a cool design from those sticky-but-removable wall hangers.

Paper - This is a really inexpensive option but you need to think creatively. Try your hand with patterns made from post-it notes. Or forget the tedious hanging job and buy several pages (or a pack) of beautiful scrapbook paper. There is a pattern to please everyone. This option is also great for those with allergies, as fabric options may collect dust.

Fun prints - Convert your photos to wallpaper. Print black and white photos on legal size (or larger) paper and hang with double-sided tape.

Fabric - You can use fabric as a background or a foreground. There are plenty of discount fabric stores offering great bargains for your quick fix. I love the look of burlap - it offers a natural texture, low cost, and functional camouflage.

Wall decals - Since we can't do traditional wallpaper; try the large removable decals. blik makes some that are really fun. Including this from the late artist Keith Haring... How's that for unique dorms?

Plywood - painted of course. Get a big piece of wood and a can of chalkboard paint. Paint a few coats and lean the board against the wall. This is more of a hassle to move at the end of the year than the other options, but can be cool for leaving personal notes and fun drawings throughout the semester.
And of course, you can always make your own art...

I love that I can put many of these elements into the first care package I send off to school. But since Chris is just over an hour away from home; I may pop in one Friday afternoon to hang some wall adornments myself :-)

Creative ways to market your work

I know we may have been taught that the best way to license and market your work was to build a portfolio of work with your particular "style" and then sign with an agent willing to rep your work at a licensing event or through established connections. Or the really traditional path of building a body of work to sell through galleries.

But happily for creative nonconformists like me - these are not the only paths to success.

As I've mentioned before your skills as a creative individual are in high demand by just about every business sector I can imagine. I tend to focus on home design, creativity and garden design just because it is my passion - but there are other many other markets that are knocking on our doors looking for artists and creative people like you.

Sorry it's been a while since my last post. I woke up early one morning to find that my hard drive had failed and all my photos and many of my files were lost. Obviously not good... Never doubt that you already have everything you need to achieve all of your creative goals. You've had those skills for some time now. In fact, by the age of 10 you already possessed everything you needed for great success.

Remember how you loved art class and creative writing? You were a dreamer. You mastered multiplication, you learned to sew, and ride a bike. Maybe you were the neighborhood tether ball champion by age 8. In a typical play day, jumping ropes, watching out for others, and tie-dying some fabulous t-shirt were all part of your accomplishments.

You have already contributed to the goodness of the world and laid out all of the skills you'd need to tap into later. But as we get older, and are taught to be serious, we tend to forget the important stuff. So may this serve as a quick reminder to; Go Play.

As the world shifts, and things change so rapidly, many companies are actively looking for people with your skill set. They need your ability to think creatively and act boldly. The same way you did back when you were 7. Even the government has a department focused on creativity. Go figure.

So if you want your creativity to sustain and support you - even part time - it is imperative for you to re-imagine. Re-imagine yourself as a bright, gifted, playful, and imaginative child. You were you know - and still are. And all of those qualities and the products you create are in great demand throughout the world.

Creative people and the companies they run are in the lead; we are nimble and able to out-think, out-play, and in the long run, out-last.

Inspire me Thursday - Bold

Hi everyone -

You know I started to skip this week, because I just could not create something that seemed to link to this week's prompt - BOLD.

The image below is the first page of one of my really old moleskine journals. Now follow me here, because it does relate to the theme. Just probably not in the way you'd think.

So... maybe you've done this --- bought a new journal and felt this almost paralyzing fear to put something down on the first page. Like it has to be really good - the best, most inspiring image

Ever.

Random thoughts float through your head, like if it's not awesome, you might as well forget creating anything on the following pages.

So with that thought, I wondered if I had ever created something bold on the very first page. And you know - I really hadn't done it very often! I thumbed through each journal I have here on my desk and found that most of the journals had writing of some sort. Apparently I like to ease into things. But I did find this one from one of my bolder days... :-) accented with metallic ink no less.

Design Innovation

I was reminded today that before this huge resurgence in the craft industry, craft got a bad rap. And some art did too; being deemed "outsider art". But thankfully craft, outsider art, and all sorts of provocative, spicy and juicy ideas have taken up residence in an area that has been fairly slow to innovate --- interior and exterior design.

I am definitely an outsider designer; or even better, an indie designer. I don't like to design uninspired spaces. I like color and personal objects. I like to feel good when I come home and I want other people to feel good when they come inside from work and school too. I want them to dream big and act boldly, and contribute to making the world a better place. And yes, I do think a good space design can encourage all of that.

So I suppose, this is the same approach an outsider artist or creative crafter would take - the approach that says I'm going to make myself happy by creating something that feels good and very personal.

And yet, this whole idea may seem unconventional when compared to a traditional design approach. But I don't mind unconventional at all - the iPOD was considered unconventional when it came out too!

Yep, an unconventional, individual, creative, outsider, design approach - the idea that your home is a manifestation of your thoughts, feelings and creative ideas.

- wild -n- radical ideas, and why I am really fond of the title of indie designer :-)

And even better embracing the indie side means sharing all the techniques and treasures we can find around us. We're living in a world of abundance after all. And technology brings everything to our doors. I love that. So here are a few inspiring resources worth exploring:

Inspire me Thursday - 7

This is my entry for this week's Inspire Me Thursday. Our creative prompt was simply the number 7. So here, out of a 7 shape is Lucky.

OK I was going for dragon here, however my son Ethan calls him a cow. Maybe it's the nose? Or maybe it's that he's never seen dragons in the pastures around here.

I think that Lucky emerged because I have been toying with the idea of doing something similar for a small wall in the kids room. I want a way to chart their growth and I figure the pointy spires on his back could be spaced out to mark their inches. They grow too fast...

7 Random Things

Thanks to Pilar, I consider myself tagged and will share 7 random things about myself below:

1. I can spot a random bug in the room within about 5 seconds after entry. I consider this a special gift. I try to accept the over abundance of bugs in North Carolina, but I have been known to kill a misplaced bug.

2. I took tap dance lessons last year for about 2 days. All of the women in class were so far ahead, and the teacher probably choreographed Fame back in the day. The teacher had also just given birth, I think her child was about a month old. The pressure got to me I suppose.

3. I used to drive a motorcycle, complete with boots, leather jacket, gloves and helmet. I thought it was cool, but I sold it after I saw a fatal accident involving a motorcycle.

4. I think that there is far too much apathy in the world and I'm not sure why that is...

5. When I was 21 I took a vacation with my mom and grandparents to Alaska, Seattle, and San Francisco. I loved Seattle but could not figure out why in the world my grandparents wanted to go on a cruise to see glaciers. I get it now though.

6. I probably spend too much money on books. I carry frequent shopper cards for nearly every bookstore in the area, and I belong to a book of the month club too.

7. I love positive surprises and I anticipate serendipity.

When I was in elementary school, in those days just before summer break started, it was hard to keep from daydreaming about all the fantastic things I would do when summer break finally arrived. And boy, when school was finished there was no better feeling in the world! That is, for about 2 weeks. At which time I'd always declare my boredom and sheer displeasure with life as I knew it in a small town.

But happily, I managed to survive, largely by tapping into my imagination and creating something fun and useful from basic raw and scrap materials. Today, there's really no reason to ever complain of boredom - not when you can take those same raw materials and combine them with new technologies to produce wildly creative summer theme projects.

Here's some SuMmER CrEatIviTY IdEaS to get you started...

Work with teens to craft a handmade product and sell it on etsy

Make scrap quilts and frame them

Build a tree fort (my favorite)

Visit the museum or the library for inspiration

Document your summer projects with a digital camera. At the end of the summer create a photo collage for their room

Grow a sunflower house using giant sunflowers for the "walls"

Make a mural on the wall

Plant a terrace garden, or tomatoes in a pot

Make stepping stones for the garden

Paint rocks

Send handmade postcards from your vacation spot

Make your own monsters

Make a creative space

Start your own list now to keep both you and the kids busy, creative and active over the summer.

I don't know about other bloggers, but I love to read comments. Not spammed comments, but comments from real people, like you, who stop in to read what I have to say. Maybe you're here because of some Google search, or maybe because you're an avid reader. But however you have arrived, if you take time to leave a comment, I read them, and I am grateful. I even say THANK YOU, even though you may not hear me :-)

Still I don't always know what the proper etiquette is for saying thanks about leaving comments. Like do I immediately log in and type my own thank you comment on my own blog? Or do I visit your blog or website and see what things we have in common and then leave my thank you/comment on your blog? I have tried both. But I'm not sure which works best.

SOOOOO.... I decided that just in case, I will say thank you now, for all the past comments, and thank you for all the future comments you may decide to leave...

Emotional Connections to Things

My studio is not ready for prime time. So I'd hesitate to share a wide-angle view of it on places like Studio Friday. Yet it is the place I retreat to when I am interested in making collages, or when I'm ready to scan illustrations and blog.

When I moved, I rediscovered all types of creative stuff (beads, tools, canvas, paper, craft glue, ribbons, fabric, books, portfolios, etc.). And because I claimed the living room as my designated studio space, the movers dumped every randomly-connected art supply there.

Fast forward a few months, and my art making in that room has slowed considerably, because of too much clutter!

What a fabulous conversation I had with my friend Cheryl Finley today. One of the many topics we discussed was letting go of past stuff. We discussed the emotional connection to things. After our conversation, I realized that I am emotionally connected to creativity. How in the world can I throw anything away - especially when there's nothing wrong with it!?!?? Yet, my studio today feels a little stifling and that is cutting down on the time I spend there to create.

So I'm now in search of a swap situation. I'm offering lots of creative materials, tools, products, books, etc that I've outgrown and are no longer serving me. If you're interested in the possibilities of purging things that don't serve you any longer, please send me an email or enter a comment below. If I have enough interested parties, I will set up a studio stuff swap group to trade useful studio/art/creativity supplies.

Let's put the energy back into our spaces.

Moleskine for More Creative Business Planning

I had some uninterrupted free time today. That is a luxury that doesn't happen often enough for me. After a leisurely lunch I began to sketch some leaves and trees. My doodling morphed into some random business ideas, and I quickly realized that there was not enough room on the tiny scraps of paper I had with me to contain all of the ideas.

Then I recalled the collection of virgin Moleskine journals at the campus bookstore across the hall from where I was having lunch; and I rushed over to buy a yummy new journal. YUM-OH. Fresh clean pages. What do you do with all that potential? Well since my thoughts were about my business I quickly decided to journal my business plans instead of doing them the way I have done them in the past. Creative company - creative business plans. Really, this journal is the space I plan to use to fashion some order out of creative chaos. Fun.

You should know that typically, I resist tradition where I can. I was used to writing down my thoughts randomly, only to lose them and rediscover them later. Finding them again was like serendipity - or my way of figuring out if the idea still worked for me. Not very efficient. I don't suggest that unless you want to waste time.

So for weeks these particular thoughts have not left me alone. So buying this journal and committing to putting the thoughts here, in just one place, and working through them is BIG for me. This is the Big dream journal - I expect amazing results.

After ripping open the plastic covering and tossing it away, I used my black Micron pen to write my full name inside the cover along with my address. I'll illustrate the first page later.

I don't feel like scanning my pages this evening; and even if I did they're likely to make sense only to me. So instead I'll describe how I'm journaling my business plans. This process is working for me because I think in pictures; and when I speak and write, I literally see the words dancing in my head. Words I can pluck out of the ether and jot on the page. And currently, woven between the words are doodles of circles, trees, hills, a paisley, arrows, flowers, dragon tails and snouts, and a random line or two. Journaldoodling. - this is the reason I'll never invest in a palm gadget to jot down my notes. I prefer pen and ink, and smooth new paper. I write in the margins. I like to create things that are out of the ordinary.

Anyway, I decided pretty easily on the format. The first page of the journal sets the intention - or what the journal is for. On the second page I listed all the ideas in my head, in short, one-to-five word phrases. On each of the next pages, I took one of the ideas from the second page and expanded on the topic.

When I've finished with my mind mapping exercise, I'll go back and see which ideas jump off the page. I'll star, highlight, or color around the biggest ideas. I won't cross out the ideas that don't agree with me, I'll just take additional notes on those ideas about why they don't work at the moment. (They might work later)

Then I'll make some plans, and a few task lists, and move forward. So maybe all creative business owners should have a journal for their life's work. It's so much more interesting this way than the typical business plan. Plus, I'd love to see some of Oprah's doodles and personal notes :-)

Inspire me Thursday - Wood (Bugs) :-)

This week at Inspire Me Thursday - the theme is Wood. We were encouraged to look around and explore wood in our environments. Well what did I find outside in the wood? Wood Bugs. Trust that I did my research on this - which is why it took so long to post this one.

Anyway - Harriet, aka Woodilus Bugilus (the yellow one with purple polka dots on the left), is related to the common cold germ and hangs out in Sycamore Trees.

The mild-mannered WOODbug on the right - yep, the one with the purple wings is the type that will hang upside down on a dead tree limb waiting for you to leave the house - and then dive bombs you. Watch it.

The one in the back. Well let's just say it's not drawn to scale. It's a huge, frightening mamabug, - she lives inside the wood too. And I'm afraid... too terrifying to speak of, let alone color in...

Inspire me Thursday - Roots

Here is my entry for this week's Inspire me Thursday. Thanks Melanie for featuring me on the artist's page! That was an awesome treat for me.

This week's topic is so apropos. This week, I am having some trees removed from my backyard. In the midst of the clearing, some roots were cut, causing one very large tree to hang by a few dozen wisteria vines over a busy street and a few power lines. Not a good thing.
As I was creating this drawing, I was thinking:

1. Don't cut your roots - family is important, even if they are dysfunctional and
2. Even the most straight laced person, who appears to have everything together on the outside, may have some wild stuff going on on the inside. If you dig a little, you never know what you'll discover!

Trees of Abundance

This weekend, the temperature was in the 90's, but I was able to do a good bit of gardening in the early morning, and again during the evening. Of course, the kids wanted to help (little ones, not the older ones); which means I have some clean up yet to do. And this coming week, we are having the backyard cleared, a meaningful first step to the backyard adventure plans which are falling nicely into place.

Anyway I still need two "street trees", so I just ordered two Red Maples from a website. Because of their mission, I wanted to share this neat resource with you for free trees, shrubs and perennials. I think it's a neat mission because they save plants, trees and shrubs from the landfills, they employ workers with disabilities, and you get free plants for your garden. This is a win-win-win-win situation (the last win is for the environment).

I just now finished this little collage project for my co-worker, Austin. A few weeks back, we went to Austin Texas for a conference. Austin being in Austin ,Texas was weird in itself - ya know because the signs with "his name" were everywhere. (I was only used to seeing his name on emails and documents!)

I knew I had a collage project in the making - if nothing else, but to to capture the link between his name and his weirdness (just kidding Austin!)

So I'll bring this into the office on Tuesday and hang it on his cube somewhere.
